Author Jeff VanderMeer has officially confirmed that his acclaimed Southern Reach series will conclude with a fifth installment titled Abdication. The announcement arrived alongside an eerie teaser description hinting at the series’ trademark mystery, focusing on a “watcher,” a “drowned woman,” and birds appearing from “gaps between the stars.”
Abdication is currently set for release on October 12, 2027, via Macmillan Publishers. The book marks the definitive end to the saga that began in 2014 with Annihilation and most recently continued with 2024’s Absolution.
