Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida warned the developers of the critically acclaimed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that branding their game as a “turn-based RPG” would likely cause it to be overlooked by modern players.
Yoshida, who advised the team ahead of its April 2025 release, feared the label carried an outdated stigma. The studio ultimately pivoted to marketing the game as having “reactive turn-based battles,” helping it become a major commercial and critical success.
