Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser believes players shouldn’t feel pressured to finish a game’s main story, emphasizing that the joy of open-world gaming comes from experimenting with the game’s systems. Speaking at the 2026 Tribeca Festival alongside creative partner Lazlow, Houser noted that while they craft elaborate narratives, the true “magic” lies in the emergent gameplay and player freedom.
Houser and Lazlow also discussed their current work at their new studio, Absurd Ventures, including their focus on creating expansive, interconnected multimedia universes like A Better Paradise. Houser acknowledged that while developers hope players see their work to the end, prioritizing the player’s agency is ultimately more important than completion.
