Sony has begun reassigning hundreds of employees at its major Thalgau, Austria, disc factory following the company’s decision to shift to an all-digital model for PS5 games starting in January 2028.
The facility, which currently churns out 600,000 discs daily, will pivot to manufacturing optical microlenses for automotive technology. This strategic shift serves as another indicator that future hardware—including the rumored PS6—may abandon physical media entirely to cut rising component costs.
