Director Zach Cregger has revealed that he removed the majority of jokes from his upcoming Resident Evil adaptation after test audiences found the film to be “too funny.” While Cregger is known for blending horror with dark comedy in films like Barbarian, he decided to pivot toward a more serious tone after seeing how test screenings reacted.
The shift appears to have been a success, with Cregger noting that both the audience and he personally preferred the edited version. Resident Evil is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
